The Less Glamorous Side of a Good Thrift Haul

Finding something wonderful at the thrift store is the fun part. Getting home and cleaning years of someone else’s dust off it? Slightly less glamorous. 😂

But that first cleanup is when I really get to appreciate what I found—the details, the colors, and the little touches I might have missed in a crowded aisle.

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day gifted me the Fall Leaves Multi-Surface Everyday Cleaner featured in this post.

For the pieces with surfaces suitable for a multi-surface cleaner, I’ve been working this one into my cleanup routine. A fall scent feels very appropriate when my thrift hauls are slowly turning into Christmas inventory. We’re apparently celebrating several seasons at once over here.

I start by removing loose dust, then check the material and care instructions before choosing how to clean each piece. Vintage finishes can be delicate, so I test a small, hidden spot first and give anything fragile its own approach.

Then comes my favorite part: seeing everything cleaned up and ready to style. A little vase gets a few stems, a decorative tray finds its place on a shelf, and suddenly that dusty thrift-store find feels right at home.

There’s something so satisfying about giving an overlooked piece a fresh start. Even if the process involves a slightly alarming number of dirty cloths.

Are you a clean-it-as-soon-as-you-get-home thrifter, or do you have a “to be cleaned” pile too?
